ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for managing information security. It provides a structured, risk-based framework for organizations to protect sensitive data, maintain operational resilience, and demonstrate compliance to customers and regulators.

Key Components

  • Information Security Management System (ISMS): The core framework of policies, procedures, and controls used to manage an organization's data risks centrally.

  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Requires organizations to systematically identify security vulnerabilities, evaluate potential impact, and implement controls tailored to specific risks.

  • Annex A Controls: A comprehensive catalog of security controls categorized across four key domains:

    • Organizational Controls: Security policies, asset management, and roles.

    • People Controls: Remote working policies, screening, and security awareness training.

    • Physical Controls: Facility access, equipment security, and physical monitoring.

    • Technological Controls: Access control, encryption, data leakage prevention, and network security.

Achieving Certification

  1. Gap Analysis: Evaluate existing security practices against ISO 27001 requirements.

  2. ISMS Design & Implementation: Define the scope, establish risk assessment policies, and apply required Annex A controls.

  3. Internal Audit: Conduct an internal review and management check to verify controls function as intended.

  4. External Audit (Stage 1 & Stage 2): An accredited third-party auditor reviews documentation (Stage 1) and inspects operational evidence (Stage 2) to award certification.
